One of the things I like about (a certain kind of) photography is how it can create odd compositions and capture things that don’t seem to go together in real life—things you would never notice at first.

In this case, the woman’s legs, which are all curves, contrast with the pavement, which is made up entirely of straight lines.

There is also the contrast between the sense of care, attention, and elegance conveyed by the woman’s body and shoes and the shabbiness and mundaneness of the pavement and the man walking on the left. The scattered leaves only add to the feeling of irrelevance of the ground.

By the way, I think they were a couple. An odd one. He was old and white; she was young and Asian.
